CALDWELL, Ohio — The tight-knit community of Caldwell is in mourning following the sudden passing of Chesne Long, a recent 2025 graduate and a beloved member of the Caldwell High School volleyball team. Long, remembered as a radiant teammate and fierce competitor, died unexpectedly this week, sending waves of grief through the village.
Details surrounding her death have not been released by the family. The focus, instead, has turned to celebrating the vibrant life of a young woman who was a cornerstone of her school’s athletic program.
As a key player for the Caldwell Redskins, Long helped lead the team to a historic season in 2025, culminating in a regional runner-up finish—a feat that galvanized the small community.
“Chesne was the heartbeat of our gym,” said Caldwell volleyball head coach, Sarah Evans. “Her energy was contagious. She played with a passion that lifted everyone around her, but more than that, she was the kind of teammate who made you feel seen and valued. This is an unimaginable loss for our program and for every life she touched.”
Tributes have flooded social media, with friends, classmates, and rivals from across the league sharing memories of Long’s infectious smile, unwavering kindness, and competitive spirit. A makeshift memorial of flowers, volleyballs, and notes has grown outside the high school gymnasium.
“She was the person who could make a grueling practice fun and could pick you up after a tough loss,” said fellow senior and teammate, Mia Carter. “She wasn’t just a shining presence on the court; she was that for all of us off the court, too. We’re all just holding onto each other right now.”
The Caldwell Exempted Village School District has made grief counselors available to students and staff. The district released a statement calling Long “a bright light in our hallways” and extending its deepest sympathies to her family and friends.
Funeral arrangements for Chesne Long are pending. The Caldwell volleyball program has announced plans to retire her jersey number in a ceremony at the start of the next season, ensuring that her legacy as a devoted Redskin will forever be a part of the school’s history.
